Our Legacy
The inception of Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital, initially known as East India Clinic, predates the birth of independent India by a year. This narrative traces the remarkable 75-year journey of Woodlands as the pioneering private hospital in eastern India. In its early years, Woodlands navigated through the challenging period surrounding India's independence, facing the departure of numerous British doctors and nurses from Indian shores. Despite these challenges, the hospital effectively addressed the evolving landscape and maintained its commitment to providing quality healthcare.

During this tumultuous time, mergers between existing hospitals were a common occurrence, driven by the need for more space to accommodate a growing number of patients and to house European medical equipment at Woodlands. This period marked a crucial phase in the hospital's evolution, showcasing its resilience and adaptability in the face of significant changes in the healthcare landscape of post-independence India.
A Royal Heritage
The Woodlands Hospital stands on the erstwhile property of the Maharaja of Cooch Behar. This large estate stretched from Alipore Road to the Diamond Harbour Road and from Sterndale Road (now known as National Library Road) to the Infantry Lines (now Command Hospital) was bought by Cooch Behar in the late 1880s.
Pioneering Advanced Healthcare
In the early days of independent Bengal, the visionary think tank prioritized the establishment of a cutting-edge medical facility. With a commitment to incorporating the latest advancements, Woodlands Nursing Home was conceived to house state-of-the-art equipment and provide unparalleled healthcare services. From its very inception, the institution set a standard by offering the finest facilities available in the city at that time.
From Colonial Beginnings to Elite Indian Births
Woodlands Hospital, initially conceived for British women during colonial times, evolved into a preferred choice for elite Calcutta families post-Independence. The earliest birth records, dated June 1948, feature predominantly British surnames. Over time, the hospital gained popularity among affluent Indian families, with names like Goenka becoming synonymous with Woodlands. Mr. Sanjiv Goenka, born in 1961, and subsequent generations, including Shashwat in 1990 and Aravya in 2021, exemplify the enduring legacy of Woodlands Hospital.
Woodlands Hospital underwent a transformative period under the leadership of Mr. Sanjiv Goenka, who joined the Board of Directors in 1994 and assumed the role of Chairman in 2002. His tenure marked a shift towards international standards, with strategic leadership appointments, technological advancements, modernization of medical equipment, and collaboration with renowned doctors. These changes elevated patient services, making Woodlands a distinguished institution known for its commitment to healing.
